Freddie Turnell WINS The Goodwin

Biggest Individual Win in Program History

Trojans,

What a whirlwind of a week for your #40 Little Rock men’s golf team last week competing in Oregon and Stanford and playing eight rounds of golf in seven days. The week was capped off with Freddie Turnell claiming the individual title at The Goodwin hosted by Stanford.

We began the week in Oregon where we held the lead after round one and had the second lowest final round score as well. Unfortunately a poor second round moved us down the leaderboard to finish 4th, but only six shots behind Oregon for the win on a bunched leaderboard. Seniors Archie Smith and Matteo Cristoni played very well finishing T6th and T8th respectively at 5-under and 4-under par. This result also led Archie to being named OVC Player of the Week.

That evening after the final round in Oregon we headed to Stanford to compete in college golf’s biggest field, The Goodwin. An elite field that consisted of 13 schools ranked inside the top-50 & 18 schools ranked inside the top-90 in the country. As a team we struggled to count a fourth score that would allow us to finish as high on the leaderboard as we would have liked which resulted in us finishing in 13th in the field of 30 schools.

Senior Matteo Cristoni had another stellar performance finishing T12th with scores of 69-68-72 (-1).

The highlight of the trip was freshman Freddie Turnell WINNING The Goodwin with scores of 69-70-66 (-5) after a 4-under dash to the finish over his final nine holes!!! Freddie made the turn to the final nine holes at 1-under par before making eagle on his 10th hole and chipping in for birdie on his 11th hole of the day. He would then go on to make birdie on the par 5 seventh hole before making two great par saves on his last two holes to claim the individual title in what is the biggest individual win in the history of the program. Freddie was also named OVC Golfer of the Week which marks the 7th time the team has earned the award in 9 events played so far this season and will be named OVC Golfer of the Month tomorrow. Freddie has had a fantastic spring season so far finishing T2nd at The Prestige, T4th at the Louisiana Classics, and now winning The Goodwin. He has a spring stroke average of 69.92 with 10 of 12 rounds this spring at or under par.

We now head to Iowa next week to finish off our regular season looking for a win and then we will head straight into the OVC Conference tournament April 20-23 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at Dalhousie Golf Club.
